Hair Loss in Women

Because hair loss in women isn’t as common as it is in men, and because it doesn’t follow the same genetic pattern as in men, it can come as a huge surprise and be psychologically devastating. Because hair loss for women is uncommon, it is culturally unacceptable and can even affect a woman’s quality of life.

The pattern of hair loss in women is different from that of men. Generally they have a diffuse thinning that affects the entire scalp. This is the most common type seen and is called “Diffuse Unpatterned Allopecia.”

Women often maintain their frontal hairlines but thin behind it. The only problem with this type of hair loss is that it usually affects the back of the head also, in the donor area. Because of this, they are generally not good surgical candidates. A consultation and thorough evaluation is needed to determine if there is anything that can be done to help.Women often see hair loss due to hormonal changes, medical conditions, or other external factors. Before a treatment plan can be made, these factors must be ruled out by lab tests and an examination with the doctor.

Hair Loss Due to Surgery or Traction
Hair transplantation, hair loss in women due to surgeryOften times after a woman has a face or brow lift she might experience hair loss or scars in visible places, such as the hairline or in the temporal region. This can be unexpected and devastating. Because of the new surgical techniques and precision instruments that are now available, these problems can now be easily solved and more importantly, is undetectable. Yes, grafts do survive when transplanted into scars, so now through the FUE technique scars can be covered by hair.
